Superintendent’s Message

The school year has entered its second half.  It has once again been a busy year.  Much has been accomplished and much remains to be done.

Our seniors are hearing of their college decisions daily.  Completing coursework and preparing for spring testing and exams are beginning to become realities for most students.  The winter sports season has just concluded and spring sports are on the horizon.  The many rituals of spring – the annual drama performance, the Community Talent Show, concerts, awards events, Junior Prom, etc. are finding their way to the spring calendar.

Currently the big news items are the development and presentation of the 2016-17 budget, the sharing of a Superintendent with our neighboring district – Elizabethtown-Lewis Central beginning July 1, 2016 and the combining of sports teams for the spring season.

Spring Sports

EKMW track and field will continue.  This is an opportunity for student athletes from Elizabethtown-Lewis Central, Keene Central, Moriah Central and Westport Central to merge together to form a team that competes in the CVAC (Champlain Valley Athletic Conference).

Softball (modified and varsity) will combine with ELCS to play as the Griffins and follow the ELCS schedule.

Baseball (modified and varsity) will be combined Griffins’ teams as well but will follow the Westport Central schedule.

Golf teams will be offered independently at both districts.

Shared Superintendent

For several years, Westport Central School has employed retired individuals to serve as the Superintendent.  Talks have been underway to explore the possibility of sharing a Superintendent with another district for a few years.  Last fall, the decision was made that ELCS and WCS would employ the same person to serve both districts in this capacity.  Plans for transition have been ongoing since then.  Mr. Scott Osborne will be serving both districts beginning on July 1, 2016.

Budget 2016 – 2017

While budget development is a year-long process, the best estimates of expenses and revenues are only now coming together.  March is budget month for the Board of Education and administration.  Westport Central has more needs than it has money.  Difficult decisions will need to be made.  A final spending plan must be prepared by mid-April for our community to consider in May.

Your consideration of the needs and the options for funding would be better made now – this month during budget development.  Please don’t wait until the vote to have your ideas heard.  I encourage you to be part of the development and decision making.  Please attend the budget workshops scheduled for March 10th, March 24th and April 14th.  Our Public Budget Hearing will be held on Tuesday, May 10th.  The Annual Meeting, Board Member Election and Budget Vote is scheduled for Tuesday, May 17th

Westport Central is a unique and special resource, one that reflects the community and plays a critical role within the community.  I encourage all community members to become knowledgeable about the school, examine the facts, offer your insight and experience, and in doing so become involved.  I hope the community shares my mission to sustain the school as a vital part of our community.

Hope to see you soon!

Mr. Joshua R. Meyer

Welcome to Westport Central School! As principal, I am proud to be part of such an historic school community and look to continue to build upon the excellent education offered to our students.  As a school, we serve the educational needs of our students beginning in kindergarten and oversee their academic, social, and emotional growth through 12th grade.  I am sure you and your family will find our school community to be a positive, engaging, and rewarding experience.

We recognize student success as being dependent on the cooperation of parents and school district staff.   Parents are our partners in the job of educating the children of this community.  Personal communication between home and school is vital to providing the best possible educational experiences for children.  Please help us foster this relationship by attending school functions and monitoring your child’s school progress.

As the K-12 Principal of Westport Central School, my goal is to foster the development of the whole school community by:

-Enhancing communication with and between all stakeholder groups.
-Challenging the academic, social, and emotional growth of our students.
-Promoting a safe, positive school environment for our students and faculty.

I thank you in advance for your support and encourage you to be as active as possible in your child’s education; working together as a team will ensure the future success of our children.  Should you have any questions, concerns, or needs, please contact me and I will do my very best to assist you in any way I can.

Sincerely,

Joshua R. Meyer
