Fluency

We are working on the improvement of reading fluency. Fluency refers to the ability to read smoothly, accurately, and with expression.  You can assist your child with Fluency at home in several ways.

Read, Read, Read. It is important for you to read aloud to your child.  It is good for your child to read to you, but it is still very important for him or her to hear examples of good reading. So head to the library, pick out a great book, and enjoy reading to your child.

Take turns. When reading aloud with your child, take turns reading the text.  You can alternate reading different sentences and paragraphs, or you can read a sentence and have your child repeat you by reading the same sentence.  Allowing your child to copy the way you read will assist in the improvement of fluency.

Be expressive. Model for your child how to read with expression.  Your child is learning to read basic text with expression, as well as using different expression when characters in the story have dialogue. As your child improves expression, you will notice reading that is smooth and pleasing to the ear.

Encourage practice. The purpose of fluency practice is to improve the manner in which the child reads. In order to do this effectively, it is necessary to allow your child to rehearse the reading of an easy book or passage.  By doing this, he or she will be able to focus on speed, accuracy, and expression rather then trying to figure out unfamiliar words.
