Phonemic Awareness

● the ability to hear: identify, and manipulate individual sounds -- phonemes-- in spoken words

Phonemic Awareness is important because

● it improves children's word reading and reading comprehension
● it helps child learn to spell

Phonemic Awareness can be developed through a number of activities, including asking children to

●identify sounds

●categorize sounds

●blend sounds

●segment words into sounds

●delete or add letter sounds to form new words

●substitute letter sounds to make new words
