Superintendent's Message
November 22, 2011

At Westport Central School we believe that there are two kinds of schools, ones that are constantly improving and ones that are not. If a school is not getting better, it is in fact, getting worse. We take improvement as a challenge, one that we fully expect to meet.

We expect our students to achieve at an excellent level.  Our elementary teachers will continue the emphasis on reading instruction and maintain the ninety-minute reading blocks each day.  We will provide opportunities for our secondary students to complete the required coursework for graduation as we always have. They will also have opportunities to participate in electives, Career & Technical Education, Advanced Placement courses, and co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.  In addition, our high school teachers will be working closely with our elementary teachers to assist with and collaborate on instruction. Currently, this collaboration includes instruction in Science, social studies, math and foreign language. The secondary teachers work with the lead classroom teacher to provide this instruction.

The new common core curricula are a focus for our instructional staff. It is easy to be confused by some of the verbiage that comes with the shifts in the state curricula, but change in instruction must occur to meet the demands of a twenty first century education. We will add at least one early release day to accommodate data team meetings where the results of instructional change are examined.

This is occurring as the school is under increasing financial pressure:  additional mandated programs without accompanying financial assistance. However, improvement is still the watchword here.

Please feel free to call, email or stop into my office. I look forward to the opportunity to discuss your perspective as we move through this school year.  As a small, rural school we can be proud of the heights to which each of our Eagles soar.
