•  Academic Eligibility

    From the handbook:

Members of school-sponsored clubs and teams are representatives of the school district. Westport Central School students who participate in extracurricular activities are expected to conform to standards that meet or exceed those in the school district’s code of conduct.

    I.          Academic Standards

In order to remain eligible for participation in the above named activities, students must maintain a passing average in all classes.  If the student's average is failing in one or more classes when midterm reports are sent, he/she will be placed on probation for two weeks. During this time, the student must bring his/her average up to passing and/or he/she will not be allowed to participate in the activity for the remainder of the season/school year (whichever is appropriate).

    Summary:

    1)      All students will be evaluated at each 5 week marking period. If they have a passing average in all courses, then there is no issue.  If they are failing, then action needs to be taken.

    2)      If failing, he/she will be placed on probation for two weeks. If the student is failing at the end of those two weeks, the student will not be able to participate in the activity for the remainder of the season or school year. The probation period may be extended if both the classroom teacher and the principal feel that significant growth is being made.

    3)      If he/she is passing, participation is okay, however the student is subject to weekly grade checks.  If a student is failing at this point, they are ineligible.

A student on probation may participate in full capacity. It is an expectation of the club advisor/coach to encourage the student to focus on academics.

All decision ultimately come down to the discretion of the building principal.
